1861 50C Scott Token MS64 PCGS. When the Confedera
1861 50C Scott Token MS64 PCGS. When the Confederate Government took over the New Orleans Mint in 1861, they considered producing their own coinage. They even had a special reverse die made for half dollars, and struck a few samples. The project never continued, although the die was not destroyed. Later, John W. Scott obtained the reverse die, and produced a number of restrikes from existing 1861-O half dollars. He also produced these Scott tokens, with the reverse of the Confederate half dollar and a special obverse that tells the story: ORIGINALS STRUCK BY ORDER OF C.S.A. IN NEW ORLEANS 1861. REV. SAME AS U.S. (FROM ORIGINAL DIES: SCOTT). These Scott Tokens are highly collectible and popular today. This example is sharply struck with prooflike surfaces and splashes of brown toning, mostly on the reverse. Lot:10808
