1861 50C Scott Restrike MS63 PCGS. This is one of the more interesting stories in the annals of Southern or Confederate coinage. The New Orleans Mint was briefly under the control of the State of Louisiana, and later the Confederacy, when the production of Confederate coinage was considered. The Confederate Congress was interested in having a currency distinct from that of the United States, and even contemplated the establishment of a denomination called the Cavalier, which would have been equal initially to five American dollars. Confederate coinage never became a reality, per se, but the reverse design of this type was saved from die trials conducted at the New Orleans Mint. Ironically, these so-called "Scott Restrikes" (for J.W. Scott and Company) were manufactured in the heart of Yankee territory in New York City, circa 1879. This piece is well struck and nicely preserved, showing good luster and few surface disturbances on either side. Very scarce at the Select grade level, and rare any finer. Population: 9 in 63, 3 finer (7/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
