1861[50C] Scott Restrike MS63 NGC.
1861<50C> Scott Restrike MS63 NGC. In 1861, the Confederate government gained control of the Mint at New Orleans and proceeded to use up the remaining precious metal on hand for coinage to advance their cause. Along the way, they had a new Confederate reverse die made up and actually produced a small number of Confederate States of America half dollars. Four of the originals are currently known. Just four proof examples of these original Confederate half dollars were coined. One of the four, along with the reverse die, were retained as a pair by the chief coiner, Dr. B.F. Taylor who eventually publicized the existence of these items. The reverse die eventually found its way into the hands of J.W. Scott, of the coin firm bearing his name. It was Scott who had these restrikes produced, and for whom they are named today.
This example has a fully lustrous surface with slightly reflective fields and sharp design features. The reverse of the restrikes is actually a Liberty Seated obverse. While this example exhibits what appears to be considerable wear, this is directly attributable to the method of manufacture. As J.W. Scott only had the reverse die available, and no obverse die, he actually produced these by impressing the die into the ground off reverse of a previously struck and circulated coin. It seems that Scott desired to make these restrikes as nearly authentic to the originals as possible, so he actually obtained 500 1861-O half dollars (which by 1879 or 1880 would have been well worn) and had the reverse planed off before producing the restrikes. Therefore, any wear on the original 1861-O half dollar would have existed prior to the restriking process, and should not be considered when grading the actual specimen.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
