1861 50C Scott Restrike MS62 PCGS. Breen-8002. W-01a. J.W. Scott purchased the original Confederate half dollar die from dealer Ebenezer Locke Mason, who in turn obtained it from New Orleans Mint Chief Coiner Dr. B. F. Taylor. Scott decided to plane down the reverses of 500 1861-O half dollars, and overstrike the reverses with the Confederate die. Apparently, Scott had an inventory of these pieces for many years thereafter, but today they are a prized substitute for the non-collectible Confederate originals. The Confederate side is lustrous, beautiful, and lightly toned. The Yankee (Seated Liberty) side is slightly blunted, has light highpoint wear, and has a series of bright, straight, and hair-thin marks. Repunching on the 1 in the date and a clash mark within the drapery confirm the Wiley-01a 1861-O obverse.
