1861 50C Scott Restrike MS61 PCGS. Breen-8002. Produced in 1879, these important restrikes are, as far as most collectors are concerned, the only obtainable representatives of Confederate coinage. The reverse die used to strike these coins is original, and J. W. Scott acquired it from coin dealer Ebenezer Locke Mason, Jr., who in turn had obtained it from Dr. Taylor. The latter had been chief coiner of the New Orleans Mint under Confederate authority. After polishing the die and producing 500 white metal impressions mated with a token obverse, Scott used the Confederate reverse to produce 500 restrikes. He planed the reverse off of 1861-dated U.S. Half Dollars before overstriking them with the Confederate reverse. This particular example is typical of the type in that the obverse appears flat and distended. The reverse is considerably sharper, although it still retains evidence of some of the die rust that greeted Scott when he purchased it. Variegated slate-gray, pale lilac, and orange-russet shadings are noted on the obverse and/or reverse. The reverse is uncommonly distraction-free for the grade, but there are scattered abrasions on the obverse. An always-popular type, and listed on page 309 of the 2003 Guide Book.
