1861 50C Scott Confederate White Metal Token MS62 PCGS. The Confederate half dollar reverse engraved by A.H.M. Patterson, with the denomination HALF DOL., is rife with symbolism of the issues that were central to the War Between the States. A Liberty cap perches on a shield of defense, representing freedom from Northern intervention for the Southern way of life. Seven stars and seven stripes appear on the shield, for the seven states of the Deep South that seceded from the Union after Abe Lincoln was elected in 1860. On the left half of the wreath stands a cotton plant. Cotton was central to the South's agricultural economy, requiring intense labor (in the form of slaves) to harvest. The wreath's right side is a palm frond, standing for triumph and victory.
The New Orleans Mint struck four original Confederate half dollars in 1861, using the regular Seated Liberty obverse die and the new Patterson reverse. J.W. Scott obtained the original CSA half dollar die in the 1870s and made 500 restrikes from the die in soft white metal, of which the present coin is an example. The obverse has the well-known Scott advertising inscription 4 ORIGINALS STRUCK BY ORDER OF C.S.A. IN NEW ORLEANS 1861. Below the date, seven stars precede REV. SAME AS U.S. and (FROM ORIGINAL DIE: SCOTT). Scott combined this obverse with the original reverse and struck 500 tokens, which he sold in October 1879 for 50 cents each. This piece shows a lightly pebbled reverse from the die rust that would have undoubtedly formed between 1861 and 1879, along with the flaw at ER in AMERICA that is diagnostic of genuine pieces. Both sides are brilliant, with a few stray contact marks that determine the grade.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
