1861 $5 MS64 PCGS. A popular issue from the inception of the Civil War, produced to the extent of 688,084 circulation strikes. The present example is well struck throughout, with pleasing radiant luster and attractive honey-lime coloration. Both sides of the piece are well preserved and free of individually noticeable marks, although a small rough patch is noted on the reverse under ATES. The high mintage makes this a common date, but it is surprisingly scarce in the better grades of Mint State. Interestingly, the date appears somewhat small and delicate, and each successive digit is shallower in the die than the one to its (facing) left. A historic coin, from the year that Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated, 10 Southern states seceded from the Union (South Carolina seceded in 1860), and the Civil War began with the shelling of Fort Sumter, S.C. Population: 40 in 64, 8 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
