1861 $5 MS64 PCGS. Produced in sizeable numbers (688,150 pieces) for the era, the 1861 is an understandably popular coin among type collectors who desire a representative of the No Motto Liberty Half Eagle. Perhaps needless to say, this early Civil War era Five is scarce to rare in the finer Mint State grades, and we would not be at all surprised if the NGC and PCGS population data for the MS64 level is swelled by resubmissions seeking an MS65 designation. While that is neither here nor there, we want to make sure that readers of this description have a clear understanding of the desirability and condition rarity of this Choice quality survivor. The otherwise reddish-gold color yields to pale powder-blue accents in a few isolated areas. Full striking quality characterizes all features save for the eagle's neck feathers on the reverse (which are still generally bold in detail), and the shimmering surfaces are overlaid in rich mint frost. There are no singularly mentionable abrasions, but a shallow planchet void (as produced) in the lower reverse field above the IV in FIVE should serve as a useful pedigree marker. Population: 41 in 64, there are just eight finer (10/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
