<B>1861 $5 Clark, Gruber $5 Copper Dies Trial MS63 Gilt NGC.</B></I> K-10c, R.7. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, later gilt. Well struck, unlike most gold 1861 Clark, Gruber five dollar pieces, which tend to be softly defined in the centers. Tiny center dots appear on Liberty's ear lobe and on the lowest horizontal shield stripe. These are rarely visible on gold examples. The glossy straw-gold surfaces are splendidly smooth. 1861 was the final date for the Clark, Gruber & Co. coined private gold coins. In 1862, the firm began to produce rectangular ingots instead. The assets of the company were purchased by the Federal government in 1863, which opened an assay office, and decades later, a branch mint.
