1861 $5 Clark, Gruber $5 Copper Die Trial VF30 NGC. K-10c, R.7. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Die trials are known for all the adopted Clark, Gruber designs from 1860 and 1861. This is a die trial of K-6 in the regular series (page 318 of Kagin's reference). When encountered, these pieces are usually Uncirculated. Since this piece was struck in copper, it is not possible that it actually circulated. Which leaves the only possibility being that it was carried for an extended period of time as a pocket piece. The surfaces are medium brown and the devices show even wear. A couple of tear-shaped planchet voids on the neck of Liberty are the only disturbances on either side.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
