<B>1861 $3 MS63 PCGS.</B></I> Only 180 to 230 examples are believed known today out of the mintage of 5,959 pieces. Most are XF-AU, but a few Uncirculated pieces have been certified. Only 18 pieces have been graded by PCGS and NGC combined with 21 coins in higher grades. From the prooflike sheen in the fields of this piece, it appears that this must have been one of the first coins struck from one of the three die pairings. The striking details are sharp on the obverse with slight weakness seen on the reverse design elements. Rich orange-gold color overall. A few tiny marks apparently account for the grade, but frankly we do not see any that merit individual mention.
