4pp. letter from future POW John E. Anderson of the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry, Company D, to his parents. Written in ink and datelined ''Camp Hicks M-d Dec. 12th [1861],'' letter reads in part: ''…our Camp now is beautifully located in the woods 4 miles from Frederick Citty M-d we are within sound of the Bells on the meeting Houses & can also hear the whistle of the engine as the cars come ratling into the citty on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. We can get passes for one day signed by Col and I have been thinking I should apply for one some day and get my picture taken. I would have done so long ago if I had had a good opportunity when I was at Darnstown I got a pass for one day for the purpose and stayed around the saloon all day but could not get a chance in there was so many applicants for pictures before me but I guess it will not be so in Frederick…our Hospital tents are verry good in dry weather and are heated by small sheet Iron box stoves we could have no better weather then we are having now so mild but we no doubt shall have cold weather soon we have bought a small stove for our tent which workes first rate…'' Anderson mustered into Company D on 25 May 1861. He was taken prisoner on 24 May 1862 at Winchester, Virginia and paroled on 26 June 1862. He reenlisted on 31 December 1863 and mustered out on 14 July 1864. The 2nd Massachusetts saw action at Winchester, Cedar Mountain, Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Resaca, Dallas, New Hope Church, Kennesaw, Atlanta and Bentonville. Some wear and separation at folds, otherwise excellent condition.
