1861 25C PR65 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Briggs 7-E, the proof die marriage of the 1861 Seated Quarter. An elusive date from the early years of increased proof production at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1861 does not appear to have been well received by the collecting public at the time of issue. Four hundred coins of the original 1,000-piece delivery were melted as unsold, leaving a net mintage of just 600 coins. The present Gem, which is certainly among the finest survivors in today's hobby, is untoned on the obverse with the exception of delicate golden overtones that appear to be confined to the peripheries. The reverse is overlaid in golden-tan patina through which razor sharp devices and glassy fields shine at all angles. The finish and striking quality are the same on the obverse, and both sides are also uniformly free of grade-limiting hairlines. An obverse lintmark (as struck) at the base of the final digit in the date and a small spot to the right of that digit are noted. Population: 9 in 65, with a mere four finer (7/02).From the Philip Kaufman Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
