1861 $20 MS65 PCGS. Ex: H.W. Bass Jr. Collection. Type
1861 $20 MS65 PCGS. Ex: H.W. Bass Jr. Collection. Type One (1849-1866) Libertys are distinguished by the TWENTY D. denomination and no motto on the reverse. The Type Two (1866-1876) twenties have the motto IN GOD WE TRUST added on the reverse, and the Type Three (1877-1907) pieces have TWENTY DOLLARS on the reverse. The 1861, with a large mintage of nearly 3 million pieces, was for years the most common issue among Type One coins, particularly in high grade--that is, until the S.S. Central America shipwreck discovery-recovery made available many high-grade examples of the 1857-S double eagle. Additional pieces of the 1861, about 500, were also recovered from the S.S Republic, but most of them grade from AU58 to MS62. The typical example of this issue grades about AU55.
The present specimen, however, should be completely excluded from those lesser plebeian coins, as this coin is patrician through and through, in appearance and pedigree. One is so used to seeing typical Liberty Head twenties in MS62 (or so) that the effect of an MS65 is quite startling. Gold's softness, even when alloyed, makes these large gold coins prone to abrasion, especially on the highpoints of Liberty's cheek. When one encounters a piece such as the present coin that is almost entirely unabraded, the impression created surpasses the effect that, for example, a high-grade Morgan dollar creates when Liberty's cheek is pristine and abrasion-free. Another similarity is the phenomenal cartwheel luster that emanates from the beautiful reddish-gold surfaces. The bold, distraction-free strike completes the picture on this incredible and memorable Gem type coin. Population: 4 in 65, 1 finer (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
