1861 $20 MS64 NGC. The absolutely gorgeous, coruscating radiant luster is more characteristic of an S-mint Morgan dollar than what one usually sees on Type One Libertys. Moreover, while the generous mintage of nearly 3 million pieces makes this the most available Type One Liberty and the one that collectors turn to for type purposes, in Choice condition the issue is actually quite rare (Garrett and Guth, 2006). As testament to that assertion, NGC and PCGS as of this writing (6/07) have certified only 33 pieces in MS64, with 15 finer--and that small population includes the nearly 500 examples found aboard the S.S. Republic!
Aside from the phenomenal luster, the present example offers attractive orange-gold coloration and a bold strike. Mentionable abrasions are nil. Competition should be deservedly fierce for this piece. Census: 22 in 64, 10 finer (6/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
