1861 $20 MS63 PCGS. The 1861 mintage of 2,976,453 pieces is one of the highest of the Liberty Head double eagle series, making it a common issue in most grades. Mint State pieces are generally available through the MS62 level. In this regard, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, indicate that "Nearly 500 examples of the date were found on the S.S. Republic. Most were in grades from AU58 to MS62." MS63 coins, such as the offering in this lot, are scarce, with fewer than 60 specimens having been certified by PCGS and NGC. Higher-grade examples are rare.
Intense luster radiates from this Select example, and a solid strike leaves sharp definition over most of the design elements. Peach-gold surfaces are relatively well preserved, revealing just a few minute contact marks that define the grade. Some light die striations are noted in the fields. Population: 30 in 63, 16 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
