1861 $20 MS63 NGC. A magnificent example of this
1861<$20> MS63 NGC. A magnificent example of this early double eagle, with boldly executed devices and excellent luster. Plentiful in circulated grades as the mintage of nearly 3 million coins were produced as quantities of gold continued to come out of the California gold fields. Demand was quite high with the coming and eventual outbreak of hostilities in 1861. Note how bright and lustrous this coin remains, as though it were just coined recently. Such quality is found from these shipwreck coins were the coins resided deep in the ocean, well below the tidal actions which otherwise would etch away the luster from the surfaces. A select group of these double eagles were recovered from the S.S. Republic shipwreck, making available some dates which were virtually unknown in mint state before. This 1861 would make a welcome addition to an advanced collection, or would make a great choice for the type collector who needs this Type I coin. The surfaces are attractive for the grade, with no deep or distracting marks on Liberty's face or neck, and the fields are pleasing too, with widely scattered and unimportant nicks, none of which command attention. Population: 25 in 63, 22 finer (6/05).
