1861<$20> MS61 PCGS. The nature of type coins for Type One Liberty Head double eagles has been heavily influenced by recent shipwreck discoveries. Among the most popular choices today are the 1857-S (as a result of the S.S. Central America) and the 1861 (from the S.S. Republic.) While not a shipwreck piece itself, this example possesses nicely struck devices and highly lustrous yellow-orange surfaces that have few marks overall, though grade-defining pinscratches are visible on Liberty's green- and lavender-tinged neck.
