<Our item number 105700>1861 $2.50 Liberty. New Reverse. PCGS graded MS-62. The surfaces are sleek and glowing with a healthy show of reddish gold color, a tint that softens to pale peach-orange around the devices. There is no spotting. Only one tiny mark on the cheek; a few others near the eagle's head. What one sees usually on this mint's coinage is dullish luster left following the recoil of the dies; greatly to our pleasure and the bidders' enjoyment, on the other hand, that is not the case here. This coin is sharp, frosty, and very attractive.

What led to the large increase in quarter eagle mintage this year? Some point to the outbreak of the American Civil War, which scared bankers, businessmen and small merchants into hoarding silver and gold money. Those with bullion rushed to the mint to have it converted into coins. Once the floating bullion supply "dried up" as the saying goes, the Philadelphia mintage figures fell in 1862-65. We can thank the brief elevated mi ntage for the survival of a few lovely Mint State specimens like the coin offered here (PCGS # 7794).

Note: A modified reverse design (smaller letters and arrowheads) was used on Philadelphia issues from 1859 through 1907.
Estimated Value $400-425.

Our item number 105700
<IMAGES>

</IMAGES>
