1861 $2 1/2 Old Reverse, Type One MS62 PCGS. Beginning in 1859 a new reverse hub was used to strike most Quarter Eagles. However, in 1859, 1860, and 1861 the old reverse hub was used occasionally. Coins struck from the old hub constitute a diminishing number with each successive year and the 1861 is very seldom encountered. The old (pre-1859) hub can be distinguished by the lowest arrowhead almost touching the CA in AMERICA. The space between the arrowheads is also more closed than on the new hub, the lettering is larger, the eagle's claws are closed, and the period after the D is more distant. This particular example has especially smooth surfaces with apricot-gold patina. The design elements are well struck, though the feathers on the eagle's right leg are soft. Neither side shows any mentionable abrasions, though some wispy slide marks are seen on Liberty's cheek. Population: 9 in 62, 7 finer (1/05). Lot:7603
