1861 $2 1/2 Old Reverse, Type One MS60 NGC. The period from 1859 through 1861 was a time of transition for the quarter eagles. The old hub with short and heavy arrows on the reverse was used until 1861 (later years for San Francisco) and the new hub with long and slender arrows was used beginning in 1859. Therefore, dies were made from both hubs during this three year period. In all three years, the old reverse or Type One pieces are substantially rarer. This example is a lovely honey-gold representative with hints of faint green overtones. It is weakly defined at the center, and the surfaces are lightly abraded as usual for the grade. Census: 4 in 60, 28 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
