1861 $2 1/2 Old Reverse AU50 Uncertified. This coin was previously offered as lot 7289 in our April 2001 Central States Signature Sale, where it was cataloged as: "The majority of 1861 Quarter Eagles were struck from a new reverse hub which was changed in 1859. However, a few pieces were struck from the leftover hub from 1858, and are very scarce. The old hub is characterized by the lowest arrowhead almost touching the CA in AMERICA. The space between the arrowheads is also more closed than on the new hub, the lettering is larger and less chunky, and the period after the D is more distant. "This is the discovery piece for the Old Reverse 1861 Quarter Eagle, having been discovered by Jim Halperin in 1983. This piece was featured and photographed in an article entitled "Quarter eagle first to show old reverse" in the October 19, 1983 issue of Coin World. After residing in the Heritage reference collection for a little over a year, the coin was sold to noted collector Dr. R.J. Hubartt the first week of January, 1985. "The surfaces display considerable mint luster, the devices are well defined, and there are a number of small, but inoffensive abrasions on each side. Several other pieces have surfaced in the intervening 18 years since its discovery, but the Old Reverse 1861 Quarter Eagle remains a very rare coin with probably no more than two dozen or so pieces extant today in all grades."
