1861<$2 1/2> New Reverse, Type Two MS67 PCGS. Smaller arrowheads and letters are characteristic of the New Reverse subtype, which is the only significant design change in the history of the long-lived Liberty Quarter Eagle. Among earlier P-mint dates in the series, the 1861 New Reverse is among the more obtainable issues at the Uncirculated level. A quick perusal of recent Heritage catalogs shows several offerings of MS64 to MS examples, but none of these measure up to the standards of the Superb Gem offered here.
This satiny-textured example is endowed with pinpoint sharpness and displays nearly flawless surfaces. The only disturbances over the placid fields are faint, shallow luster grazes to the left of the portrait. Several alloy stains of various depth are scattered about both sides, the deepest of which is a small, round discoloration just to the left of 12 o'clock on the obverse border.
