1861 $2 1/2 Clark, Gruber & Co. Quarter Eagle MS61 NGC. A beautifully preserved piece, this coin exhibits bright, light yellow-gold surfaces with abundant luster, has nice clean rims with nary a mark, and is better struck than many seen of this denomination as the obverse stars are all sharp in the centers, indeed crisp if delicate (thin in style), PIKES PEAK on Liberty's headband crisp in each letter (only the top of the A is filled in), and Liberty's face is nicely detailed, showing softness only on the highest portion of the curl by the ear. The reverse is similarly well detailed, lacking tiny details only in the center, the outer legend as bold as anyone could wish for. Abrasions are tiny and relatively few, mainly faint; on the obverse, a few light scrapes. Traces of die clashing are noted in the fields. The yellow-green alloyed gold is exceptionally pleasing to the eye. All in all, a beautifully balanced piece of Colorado mining history. As Kagin aptly states: "The story of Clark, Gruber & Co. is essentially the story of the beginning of commerce in Colorado." Here is a wonderful memento of those days.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
