1861 $2 1/2 Clark, Gruber & Co. Quarter Eagle MS60 NGC
1861<$2 1/2> Clark, Gruber & Co. Quarter Eagle MS60 NGC. K-5, R.4. The respected private minter of Clark, Gruber, & Company struck the four major denominations of gold coins in both 1860 and 1861, imitating corresponding Federal types except for the volcanic Pikes Peak motif on the 1860 ten and twenty dollar pieces. Like all Clark, Gruber gold coins, excluding the rare off metal die trials, the 1861 quarter eagle is scarce but collectible. As always, the centers are somewhat softly impressed, while the remainder of the design is sharp. The light honey-brown surfaces retain ample luster and are unmarked, aside from moderate planchet roughness at the base of the obverse. Listed on page 362 of the 2007 Guide Book.
