1861 $2 1/2 Clark, Gruber & Co. Quarter Eagle AU58 NGC. K-5a, R.7. Recutting on obverse star 7 above the P in PIKES distinguishes this variety from the more common (per Don Kagin) K-5 variety. Star 6 is also recut, and even more readily evident at that. This is a pale, yellow-gold representative with a typical strike for the type that sharpens considerably toward most areas around the borders. The surfaces, while moderately abraded, are largely free of singularly bothersome distractions. An important opportunity for the Territorial gold specialists among our bidders, this is the first near-Mint 1861 Clark, Gruber & Co. Quarter eagle of either variety that we have handled in at least ten years. Listed on page 302 of the 2003 Guide Book. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
