1861<$2 1/2> Clark, Gruber & Co. Quarter Eagle AU58 NGC. K-5, R.4. Colorado was part of the unofficial Jefferson Territory. Kansas was the other part and was admitted to the Union in 1861. A concerted movement in Congress made sure that the remainder of Jefferson Territory, i.e., Colorado, and its vast mineral resources, would remain in the Union. Similar to California 13 years earlier, the monetary needs of the new territory outstripped the government's resources to convert raw bullion into coinage. As a result, private industry stepped in temporarily in the firms of Conway & Co. and Clark, Gruber. 1861 was the most productive year for Clark, Gruber with more than a half million dollars of coinage placed in circulation. Because the needs for commerce were so great, quarter eagles, such as this piece, are seldom seen in such a superior state of preservation. The centers of each side are a bit softly struck, as always, with noticeable traces of mint luster surrounding the devices. The basic green gold color of the planchet has taken on a light overlay of reddish patina, and there are no distracting abrasions on either side. Census: 17 in 58, 14 finer (1/06).
