<B>1861 1C PR66 </B></I> S<B> NGC.</B></I> The 1861 proof cent is the key date in the proof series, partly due to low mintage (est. 1,000 pieces), low survivability, poor quality of the dies, and poor striking quality (Richard Snow, 2006). The Premium Gem proof with Star can thus be considered a special offering. Its razor-sharp and lightly frosted design elements stand amidst reflective fields, and yield noticeable contrast when the coin is tilted under a light source. A couple of as-made unobtrusive planchet indentations on the neck do not detract in the least. Census: 1 in 66 S, 0 finer with or without star(8/07).<BR><BR><B>Coin Engraver:</B> James B.
