1861 1C PR64 PCGS. The otherwise honey-gold surfaces reveal flickers of pale lilac iridescence at certain angles. When rotated under a light, both sides also display modest, yet pleasing brightness in the fields. Razor sharp in strike with a few reverse contact marks over the ON in ONE that seem to preclude an even higher grade. Although the original mintage of the proof 1861 was 1,000 pieces, Snow (1992) believes that at least 600 coins were melted as unsold at year's end. He also states that many additional examples may have been spent during the turmoil of the Civil War. Perhaps only 150 proof 1861 Cents are extant at all levels of preservation.
