1861 1C MS68 PCGS. Between 1860 and 1864, the Philadelphia Mint delivered more than 120 million Cents in the copper-nickel format. These were variously called Nickels or Nicks by the public. Probably around 25 thousand of these coins are extant in Uncirculated condition, with more than 5,000 pieces currently certified as such by PCGS alone (10/02). In this entire group, only one example has received an MS68 designation from the Professional Coin Grading Service--the present 1861 representative. As such, this coin is not only the finest known for the issue, but also the finest known for the 1860-1864 copper-nickel Cent type. Both sides are fully struck and, as one should expect for the assigned grade, distraction-free. Lovely golden-tan color is seen throughout with a little light champagne-apricot iridescence. This sale marks the first auction appearance of this important 1861 Indian Cent. Demand for this example will come from collectors who are assembling Superb quality type sets, as well as from those who are working on the finest date set of Indian Cents.Ex: Dr. Alan Epstein Collection; Eagle Eye Rare Coins (1995); Joseph P.
