1861<1C> Confederate States of America Restrike PR62 Brown NGC. Breen-8008. Restrike C.S.A. Cents were offered by Capt. John W. Haseltine in early 1874. According to Haseltine, the dies were authorized by the Confederacy and made by noted engraver Robert Lovett, Jr. in 1861. Fearful of having committed treason, Lovett kept his involvement with the project a secret until he accidentally spent one of the few struck cents at a bar in late 1873. The Confederate Cent found its way to Haseltine, who procured the original dies from Lovett and produced restrikes. Nearly a century later, Robert Bashlow obtained the dies, which were by then defaced, and struck further pieces. The present piece is a Haseltine and not a Bashlow striking, since the dies are perfect. This crisply struck example has faded orange-red borders and milky olive-brown and steel-blue centers. Four small spots on the obverse field decide the grade. Listed on page 375 of the 2006 Guide Book. Envelope Included.
