1861<$10> Clark, Gruber & Co. $10 White Metal Die Trial MS63 NGC. K-11, R.8. Even though a large number of Clark, Gruber gold coins were struck and they constituted the majority of gold coins in circulation in Colorado in the early 1860s, there are very few survivors in any grade today. However, as rare as the coins are, die trials are even more difficult to locate. Probably only 2-3 examples are known of the white metal 1861 ten dollar. These pieces are double thick. They were also struck without a collar, which creates an off-center appearance on most examples. This piece has a rim of blobbed metal around the end of the dies, and unlike other die trials is fairly well centered. The surfaces are light to medium gray with noticeable brightness around the reverse lettering.
Accompanied by an NGC Photo Proof.
