The Clark brothers began business as grocers in 1857. Then they partnered with attorney Emanuel Gruber and became bankers. As bankers they received an annoying amount of gold dust from local miners and the transition to coiners was plainly laid out as their next commercial enterprise. In its two years of operation, more than half a million dollars of gold bullion was converted to Clark, Gruber gold pieces. Of that amount, a considerable number of ten dollar gold pieces were struck (of which few remain today). This is a die trial for the second year of issue for the ten dollar, struck in copper with no collar and therefore has a plain edge. Expertly engraved by the firm of Bailey & Co., the definition on this trial striking shows intricate detailing on Liberty's hair curls and the feathers of the eagle. The proof surfaces add brightness to the iridescent brown and blue coloration seen over each side with considerable remnants of original copper surrounding the devices on both sides. An exceptional piece of Western Americana.
Accompanied by an NGC Photo Proof.
