1861 $1 PR66 Cameo NGC. According to mint records, 1,000 proof silver dollars were minted in 1861, and all delivered on April 15 of that year. In his book Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, David Bowers says that only about 350 were ever sold as part of copper-nickel and silver proof sets, and "... early in 1862 over 600 sets were consigned to the melting pot." Bowers goes on to say: "Today, 1861 Proof dollars are very elusive. Not only was the distribution low ... but those sold seem to have had an unusually high attrition rate." NGC/PCGS population figures show that about 180 coins have been certified, some of which, of course, are likely to be resubmissions. Fewer than 30 Cameo have been seen.
The Premium Gem Cameo in this lot is essentially untoned, and its frosty motifs sit amidst deeply mirrored fields. The strike is outstanding, leaving none of the design elements with even a hint of weakness. A few wispy hairlines in the fields show up under high magnification, and prevent a possibly even higher grade! No pieces have been graded higher by either NGC or PCGS. Census: 2 in 66 Cameo, 0 finer (8/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
