Silver dollars were not released into circulation at the time. Rather, they were actually sold by the Mint at 108 cents each, according to James Pollock in his annual Mint Report. In a commentary by R.W. Julian, it was noted that substantial melting of silver dollars occurred during this time, with at least 40,000 of these melted in 1861. This was so that they could be recoined into small denomination silver issues. The current example is sharply struck, displaying excellent definition in Liberty's hair and sandal, and on the eagle's talons. The surfaces are nearly white, revealing just a hint of incipient color. The only blemish on this appealing dollar is a small linear-type abrasion in the left reverse field. This coin generates great overall eye appeal.
