Referenced in Russel Beatie’s landmark reference book Saddles as a “nonmilitary, gentleman-riders charro saddle,” this rare Maximillian period Mexican saddle is constructed with the classic exposed rawhide covered tree, large flat, silver trimmed Mexican horn cap (often referred to as the “dinner-plate horn”), and featuring a partially quilted seat, silver trimmed cantle cover, center-fire rigging embellished with silver thread, silver inlaid rings, plus original bulldog tapaderos secured with three, coin-silver slotted conchos and adorned with intricate silver threaded floral patterns. A very prized early collector saddle in good overall condition. Circa 1860s.
