late 1850's early 1860's Civil war period Baltimore oil on canvas portrait of a man artist singed by Carl Bersch 1834-1914.Bersch painted in the Baltimore, Washington D C area. Prominent among Baltimore artist. He was born in Germany and moved to Baltimore, Maryland in the mid 19th century. He was a genre and portrait painter. He has works at the Maryland Historical Society and also at the Ford?s Theatre National Historic Site has a painting by him 1865 called "Borne by Loving Hands" As well as works in other museums.

The portrait is singed by Bersch in red in the lower left hand corner. The back of the canvas has a Baltimore retail mark of Minifie & Sons artist depot No, 5 N, Charles. I don't know who the sitter is but it is a 19th century Baltimore person. This portrait is in it original American made mid 19th century gold leaf & acanthus molded frame. This Frame has most of it's gold but does have a few nicks to the detail. The portrait has crackature to the overall painting and has a small flack missing off of his forehead. The size of the canvas is 24" 1/2 by 29" 1/2 Frames 32" by 36" it is a very nice large size.
