1860 Staff &Field officer’s sword of late 19th century manufacture by Horseman, Philadelphia. The blade is etched with owner’s name, “G. N. Benchley”. Lt. Benchley graduated from West Point and was killed in action at the battle of San Juan Hill in the Spanish-American war. The blade is in good condition with most of its etching, and shows some erosion and pitting in the forward 8”. The hilt shows traces of gold gilt gone to patina. The sharkskin ire wrapped hilt is good, the scabbard shows pitting and erosion and the sword has been carry-used during the Spanish-American war era or slightly before, and may have been with this officer. Would be interesting to further research, from an important old-time collector. Est: $1,000 - $3,000
