<B>1860-S $3 AU55 PCGS.</B></I> Aside from the Bass 1870-S three dollar gold piece now held by the American Numismatic Association, the 1860-S is the final and most elusive of the S-mint issues of this denomination. The mintage of just 7,000 pieces, combined with heavy circulation demand and a minuscule collector population, ensured that high-grade survivors would be few. The pale honey-gold piece offered here is one such survivor. The well struck surfaces display only minor wear, and each side retains significant peripheral luster. Light handling marks in the fields further attest to brief circulation. An attractive example that is considerably more affordable than any Mint State piece known to numismatists today.
