1860-S $20 AU55 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. After the Civil War, gold and silver coins were in short supply in the important port of New Orleans, and the treasure recovered from the S.S. Republic was meant to facilitate transactions in "hard money." This faintly worn S-mint double eagle, well struck with subtle greenish accents enlivening its still-lustrous yellow-gold surfaces, shows a number of light but not individually distracting marks in the fields. A presentation case, booklet, and DVD from Odyssey Marine Exploration accompanies the lot.
From The Arroyo Grande Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
