1860-S $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Repunched Date. Breen-6255, "rare." Remnants of previously punched digits are evident between the 86 and 60 in the date. Breen (1988) suggests that this is the scarcer of the two known varieties of the 1860-S Quarter Eagle, but one should not overlook the fact that survivors of this issue are elusive from an absolute standpoint. The typically offered representative will grade VF or XF, and Uncirculated examples number just 16 pieces at NGC and PCGS (1/03). This near-Mint coin would do justice to any advanced collection of 19th century gold. Both sides are partially lustrous with lovely golden-rose highlights over generally sharp features. Lightly abraded, as befits the grade, with a mentionable graze in the right reverse field. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
