1860 S$1 PR65 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint delivered a record total (for the Seated Dollar series) of 1,330 proofs in 1860. All of these coins were delivered on March 8, but only 527 were eventually sold. Those that were not found their way into the melting pot. Nevertheless, the proof 1860 is not particularly rare as an issue, and collectors can usually locate a lower grade survivor with a little patience. As one might surmise for a proof silver coin of this size, Gems are elusive, and the present coin is remarkably free of distracting hairlines and contact marks. In fact, there are none of the former that are worthy of individual mention, and a small scrape in the reverse field below the right foot of the N in ONE is noted solely for pedigree purposes. The pleasingly reflective surfaces are overlaid in delicate olive-gold patina with a few whispers of variegated color here and there. It has been seven years since we last offered a Gem proof 1860 Seated Dollar; even the Morris Silverman Collection, as impressive as it was, included only a near-Gem.
