1860$1> PR65 NGC. In his book Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, David Bowers writes that the 1,330 proof production of the 1860 dollar was abnormally large, and "... the highest proof figure in the entire Liberty Seated series, all delivered on March 8. Only 527 were eventually sold, and the rest were consigned to the melting pot." Approximately 250 survivors have been certified by NGC and PCGS combined, mostly in the PR62 to PR64 grade range. In Gem Proof, the grade of the current example, 17 pieces have been graded, and 13 finer (4/06).
A veneer of attractive medium intensity magenta color with bluish and purplish accents covers both sides. The design elements are sharply impressed, except for softness in the centers of the fourth, fifth, and sixth stars. The surfaces are nicely preserved, showing just minor marks on Liberty's cheek and right (left facing) arm. A couple of more noticeable short pinscratches and associated contact marks in the left reverse field are mentioned for accuracy.
