1860 Presidential Election “Little Giant” Stephen Douglas
c. 1860, Albumin Carte De Visite of Lincoln Presidential Election Campaign Opponent Stephen Douglas. Very Fine.
A strikingly handsome original period albumin photo Carte De Visite of Stephen Douglas taken during his Presidental campaign as the Democratic candidate for President in 1860 and following the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates. Signature upon the blank reverse is in another hand for identification purposes, not by Douglas. He was a serving Senator from Illinois at the time and died the following year (1861) of typhoid fever. Scarce.
Stephen Arnold Douglas (1813 – 1861), was an American politician from the western state of Illinois, and was the Northern Democratic Party nominee for President in 1860. He lost to the Republican Party's candidate, Abraham Lincoln, whom he had defeated two years earlier in a Senate contest following a famed series of “Lincoln - Douglas” debates.
