1860 P$5 Gilt Five Dollar, Judd-272, Pollock-320, Low R.6, PR61 Red and Brown NGC. The obverse shows a bust of Liberty facing right, wearing a cap ornamented by three stars. A ribbon at the base of the bust is inscribed LIBERTY. Around the margin, there are 13 stars and below, the date. On the reverse there is an eagle and shield, olive and arrows in the claws. The beak of the eagle holds a ribbon inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM. Around, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the denomination FIVE DOLLARS below. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. This design has an interesting die blunder in that the V in FIVE is actually an upside down A. Quite a few of the copper strikings of Judd-272 have been gilt. Such pieces create the appearance, without the actual substance, of a gold striking. Only two gold pieces are known, both of which were in the Wilkison Collection. This is a bright, attractive piece with all the gilt intact on each side. Noticeable hairlines account for the grade.
From The Madison Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
