1860-O 50C MS64 PCGS. Workers at the New Orleans
1860-O<50C> MS64 PCGS. Workers at the New Orleans Mint produced 1,290,000 half dollars in 1860, just prior to the start of the Civil War. Of course, at the time they couldn't be aware of the events to follow a year later, as the Mint was seized by the Confederacy. Although not quite Gem quality, this example is a splendid representative of the issue with satiny luster beneath attractive golden-brown and iridescent toning. Both sides have sharp central details with somewhat weakened peripheral elements, with the stars to the right especially weak. A scarce variety that is elusive in Gem or Near-Gem condition. Population: 23 in 64, 18 finer (5/05).
