1860-O $20 AU58 PCGS. From a paltry original mintage of 6,600 pieces comes this high Condition Census survivor. The 1860-O has an extant population of perhaps 85-95 pieces, the vast majority of which grade no finer than VF. At the Extremely Fine level, this date is scarce, and About Uncirculated examples are rare with no more than 22 so graded coins believed extant (per Doug Winter, 2002). Writing in 1992, Winter states that there is only one Mint State 1860-O Double Eagle available to today's specialists. That coin, which the author grades "MS60 or so," is the former Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. specimen that sold as lot 901 in the October 1982 Bowers and Ruddy sale of the United States Gold Coin Collection. There are, however, no Mint State 1860-O Double Eagles currently certified at NGC or PCGS (10/02). The Eliasberg specimen may not have been submitted to one of these services, or it has been graded AU. Either way, the advanced collector who requires the finest certified '60-O Twenty will have to obtain one of the few AU58 examples known to NGC and PCGS. There can be no doubt that this coin was struck with a prooflike finish, as ample reflectivity remains despite light rub and a scuffy appearance from a short stint in circulation. The first four stars on the obverse are weakly defined over the centrils--a common feature for the issue--but the balance of the devices are appreciably sharp. The dominant golden-yellow color, however, is typical for an 1860-O Twenty, and modest suggestions of olive tinting are seen as undertones when the coin rotates away from the light. A nearly vertical scrape at the back of Liberty's cheek is the most useful pedigree marker.Ex: Shuford Collection (Kosoff, 5/1968), lot 2418; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 11/2000), lot 832, where it realized $21,850. The coin was certified AU55 by PCGS at the time of the latter sale. From the Ashland City Collection.
