1860-O $20 AU58 NGC.
1860-O $20 AU58 NGC.<p>The 1860-O is the fifth rarest New Orleans Double Eagle. It is fairly similar in overall rarity to the 1859-O, but is slightly more available in higher grades. Some 85-95 pieces are known in all grades with approximately 17-22 of these grading About Uncirculated. When an AU coin does become available, it tends to be a low-end example with heavily abraded surfaces and poor eye appeal. There were two comparably high grade 1860-O Double Eagles in the Bass collection. The first was a PCGS AU55 in the Bass II Sale (October 1999) which brought $19,550. In the November 2000 Bass IV Sale, a similarly graded example realized $21,850. A "Choice About Uncirculated" piece fetched $23,500 in the October 2001 Dallas Bank Collection Sale. Clearly, this is a date whose level of demand has increased in the past two years and prices have risen accordingly. This is a curious coin as it is atypical for the issue in several ways. The first four stars are weakly defined, as always, but the remainder of each side is exceptionally well brought up with notably strong definition on the other nine peripheral stars, the eagle's plumage, and the oval of stars above the eagle's head. Also, the expected color for this issue is a lighter, golden-yellow shade. This piece, however, has a rich reddish-coppery patina over each side. One would also normally expect heavy abrasions on an 1860-O Double Eagle, but this piece is notably free from any mentionable post-striking impairments. In fact, the only surface flaw that can reliably used as a pedigree identifier is a small planchet void between the point of Liberty's bust and the rim.
