1860-O<$20> AU55 NGC. The mintage of this issue was halted after only 6,600 coins had been struck, meaning it is one of the scarcest of all Type One double eagles. Winter and Crum ranked this coins as the fifth rarest of 43 different issues in the series. They commented that: "The 1860-O is slightly less scarce than the 1859-O. It is most often seen in grades ranging from Very Fine-30 to Extremely Fine-45. An accurately graded About Uncirculated-50 represents above-average quality for this date and any piece in the middle range of AU is very rare."
This example is a coin that will please the connoisseur. The surfaces have deep orange-gold color with considerable green overtones. Both sides exhibit satiny luster with much of the original prooflike surface still evident. While light abrasions have been acquired over nearly a century and a half, the surfaces do not exhibit any of the deep or distracting marks that are almost always a problem for this date. The first four stars at the left obverse are weakly defined as always. The highest elements of the design on the obverse, including much of the hair details, are also poorly defined as usual. We fully expect that this appealing example will bring a strong price in relation to the normal market levels for this date.
From The Wyoming Collection.
