1860-O $20 AU55 NGC. Although similar in overall rarity to the 1859-O, the 1860-O is the more difficult coin to locate in grades above the Extremely Fine level. The present example and the AU58 PCGS representative in the following lot are finer than the typically offered About Uncirculated survivor. The overall definition is generally bold, although we note some incompleteness of strike on the obverse over stars 1-4, the top of Liberty's head, and the highpoints of the hair curls. Rich olive-gold undertones give way to medium intensity honey-gold shades as the coin turns directly into the light. The scattered abrasions include a moderate scrape near the reverse border after the D in the denomination that should serve as a useful pedigree marker. A similarly graded 1860-O Double Eagle in a PCGS holder realized $19,550 as lot 1738 in Bowers and Merena's October 1999 sale of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection. That coin and the present representative from the Ashland City Collection both fall within the Condition Census for the issue. From the Ashland City Collection.
